Historical Review
In Hungary
initiatives for starting pharmaceutical production on an industrial
scale were taken relatively early. In 1867 the first pharmaceutical enterprise was founded in
Budapest. At that time in
Europe, only London, Paris, Milan and Brussels had functioning
associations of similar tasks.
At the turn of
the twentieth century, new industrial enterprises were established
mainly from pharmaceutical laboratories. The most successful ones were the firm of Gedeon Richter Limited
incorporated in 1901. The company now known as Chinoin Pharmaceutical
and Chemical Works founded in 1910 by Dr. Emil Wolf. The subsidiary
company of the swiss firm, Dr. A. Wander, founded in 1912 now known as
EGIS Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
By the early
1940’s, thirty-six drug manufacturing companies were operating in
Hungary some of which exported to forty-two different countries at that
time. Unfortunately, the
second World War disrupted the progress of the Hungarian Pharmaceutical
Industry. The industry was
rebuilt and reorganized by the early 1950’s when production was
centralized in eight large enterprises and these companies followed the
great tradition of the Hungarian Pharmaceutical Industry.
The rights for
pharmaceutical export and import was assigned to one enterprise,
Medimpex Hungarian Trading Company for Pharmaceutical Products, which
was established in 1949.
In the late
1970’s early 1980’s, Medimpex started to establish its network
companies worldwide and by the mid 1980’s Hungarian pharmaceutical
products were exported to more than one hundred and fifty (150)
countries all over the world.
After the
fundamental changes in Hungary’s economic, political and social system
in the early 1990’s, the two major pharmaceutical manufacturers,
Gedeon Richter and Egis took over the ownership of Medimpex and more
importantly the network companies worldwide. Today, Gedeon Richter, Egis and Medimpex together have more than
fifty scientific offices, joint venture companies, manufacturing and
trading firms all over the world. There
are other Hungarian pharmaceutical companies owned by foreign
enterprises, but fortunately Medimpex West Indies remains the sole
appointed representative of all these enterprises.

Medimpex West Indies Limited
Medimpex Hungary
established its first scientific office in Jamaica in 1979. This scientific office was later reestablished as a trading firm
known as Medimpex Jamaica Limited in 1982. In 1984 to continue the diversification exercise, Medimpex West
Indies was established and this company took over the entire
export/import activity mainly from Hungary to the Caribbean and part of
Latin America, while Medimpex Jamaica became the exclusive distributor
for the Hungarian pharmaceutical companies in Jamaica. During these years, the companies vigorously observed the
valuable traditions of Hungarian pharmacology, and in a wider sense
those of the Hungarian medical science.
In recent years,
some of the finest manufacturers of pharmaceuticals in different parts
of the world have appointed our company to distribute their products in
our marketplace. With the
mixture of Hungarian and international manufacturers, we are able to
offer a very wide range of world class products.
We are very
proud that Medimpex was the pioneer in the early 1980’s in introducing
the first highest quality branded generic products to the Jamaican
public and private sectors.
Detailing
& Customer Care
The Marketing Department is
headed by the Marketing Manager, who is a well-trained experienced
pharmacist with a vast knowledge of economics and marketing. A Marketing
Supervisor, also a pharmacist with comprehensive experience in the
activities of the pharmaceutical trade, works together with the
marketing manager to co-ordinate all the activities of a team of well
educated medical and sales representatives. The total number of the
medical and sales representatives is eleven, with eight working in the
Jamaican markets while three are in Trinidad & Tobago.

CONSCIOUSNESS
Medimpex in keeping with its
commitment to provide high quality health care products and health care
education to the people of Jamaica is actively involved in community
outreach programmes. Our Marketing team works tirelessly with different
service groups, community outreach programmes giving lectures as well as
to donate products to clinics, hospitals, churches, schools etc. In
addition we sponsor a number of professional groups and students; and
every year we donate medical books and a trophy to the Pharmacy
Department of the University of Technology.
